In Search of Healthy Habits in Indonesia
Rain Barrel recently tied the ribbon on an ambitious Social and Behavior Change Communication project to improve the diets and physical fitness of teens in 39 schools in two pilot provinces in Indonesia. Supporting ongoing UNICEF and government nutrition programs, RBC's team designed an evidence-based, participatory strategy to engage and motivate young people to embrace healthier lifestyles amidst growing problems of both undernutrition and overweight.
The latest available figures indicate that in Indonesia:
More than 7 million children under-five are stunted, or too short for their age.
More than 2 million children under-five are wasted, or too thin for their height.
2 million children under-five are overweight or obese.
About 1 in 4 adolescents suffer from anemia, most likely due to deficiencies in essential vitamins and nutrients such as iron, folic acid and vitamin A.
The SBCC strategy is currently being implemented and results of the pilot will be assessed after its first year. If successful, the initiative may be replicated in other parts of the country or even at national scale.
