Letter from a Scottish Mother about Corporal Punishment

Rain Barrel is starting to collaborate with a coalition to end corporal punishment of children in the United States. We took part in the recent summit on the issue hosted by the New York Foundling Hospital.

One of the participants sent us a powerful letter from a Scottish woman about smacking — what we call spanking here.

Here’s the moving and eloquent letter that tells a personal story and absolutely demolishes arguments in favor of corporal punishment.

The letter was published as Scotland moved to ban spanking.

By the way, dear friends, we would welcome your thoughts on the issue and any suggestions you have for carrying out a campaign in the US to end corporal punishment in the current complicated and polarized environment in the States.
