Natural childbirth

I know it's always dicey for men to make pronouncements about childbirth, given the unfair division of labor Mother Nature has assigned men and women when it comes to reproduction, but I am a strong believer in natural childbirth -- and home birth when it's possible.

In the U.S. and a growing number of other countries (including major cities of developing countries), childbirth has become a series of hi-tech medical interventions -- with outcomes that lag behind countries that promote more natural birth.Thinking about the consequences of this for mothers and their babies -- and for society at large -- I always go back to this wonderful quote from Suzanne Arms:"If we hope to create a non-violent world where respect and kindness replace fear and hatred, we must begin with how we treat each other at the beginning of life. For that is where our deepest patterns are set. From these roots grow fear and alienation -- or love and trust."

Everyone should see the documentary, "The Business of Being Born". Here is the website.
