Let’s select the next UN Secretary-General: Puzzling over “One for seven billion”
We at Rain Barrel are encouraged by the growing demand for a transparent process around the selection of the new Secretary-General, who will replace Ban Ki-moon next January. We were excited by initiatives that are attempting to give global citizens a say in the selection.
Who would you nominate? What questions would you ask the candidates?
We believe that the transparent selection of candidates increases the chances of finding the uniquely qualified person – whether a man or a woman. Clearly it's time for a woman to take on this incredibly demanding job. The United Nations needs a dynamic, empowered leader, not the Permanent Five’s backroom compromise on the lowest-common denominator. We support the demands for a public review of the candidates who have been nominated by Member States.
The UN General Assembly is holding public hearings from 12-14 April to ask the nominees how they would provide the leadership to make the Organization effective and relevant in the years (possibly two five-year terms) ahead.
