A Pandemic Time Capsule

Over the last few months, many aspects of our lives have been touched in some shape or form by COVID-19 pandemic. We asked some of our fantastic photographers to share their depiction of the pandemic so far. From empty streets, to masks and physical distancing, their photos serve as a memoir of some of the most drastic and rapid changes in norms and behaviours that the virus brought about. What will you remember?

Gonzalo Bell is a freelance photographer who specializes in humanitarian and development issues. He has more than 14 years of experience and has worked in more than 30 countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania for UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP, OCHA, IOM, UN Women, UNFPA, WHO, and other international non-governmental organizations. His images have appeared in over 100 UNICEF publications, photo essays, and digital platforms.

Georg Steinboeck is an award-winning documentary filmmaker based in Vienna. His professional and personal work focuses on social themes like AIDS, violent extremism and medical research. To capture the authenticity of the moment and to maximize flexibility, Georg works alone or with a small team, taking advantage of today’s increasingly mobile digital equipment. Georg’s special talent is to craft intimate and authentic portraits of people who live on the margins of society. He has filmed in India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Yugoslavia and other countries. Georg also works regularly as a video/photo coach, both for beginners and advanced users. He specializes in helping institutions to use digital communications more creatively. Since 2009, he has conducted over 40 workshops on four continents.

He has started to work on a documentary showing the effects of the Pandemic in Vienna, Austria. Here’s a teaser showing some of that footage from the beginning of the crisis:


Patricia Willocq is a freelance photographer born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo and based between Belgium and Turkey. Along with her consultancies around the world, she dedicates time to support the work of associations and NGOs focusing on women and child development, social inclusion, community engagement, emergency preparedness, and climate change adaptation. Her work has been exhibited by OHCHR, UNESCO, UNICEF, and the Belgian and Austrian Parliaments, among other prestigious venues. Her photos have been featured in media such as Geo magazine, National Geographic, the UNICEF book on 25 years of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to name a few.
